Daniel W. Zimmerman, 87, of Edmeston went home to the Lord Tuesday January 10, 2012 surrounded by his family at Bassett Healthcare Network in Cooperstown.

He was born May 16, 1924 at Dutch Valley Farm in Edmeston. He was son of Harry and Mildred (Barrett) Zimmerman. In 1971 he was married to Betty (Burch) Rogers by Rev. John Blackman.

Dan graduated from Edmeston Central School in 1942, and was a well-recognized basketball player. He served in the United States Army during WWII. He was a member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Post #1311 and the VFW Post #2238 in West Winfield.

Dan was extremely proud of his family’s farm and homestead; his choice of cows was Holsteins, and his tractor of choice was John Deere. He was a member of the Dairylea and Cooperative Extension. Dan was also an avid gardener well known for flowers, plants and especially the Christmas Cactuses.

Dan was also involved in the Edmeston community as a member of the Second Baptist Church and a Life member of the Edmeston Fire Department. At home he was fond of watching sports including professional football, SU for basketball and the Yankees for baseball.

He held an endless amount of love for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They brought him joy and wonderful fulfillment with each visit.

He is survived by his wife Betty, his children Nancy Arlette Forste (Robert), Geraldine LeClar (Gerald), Martine Tangredi (Don), and Laura Ann Brown (Larry); his stepchildren Sandra Jeanne Corey (William), Barbara Jo Hilts (Douglas), David Wayne Rogers (Patricia); 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 1 niece and 3 nephews.

His grandchild Tammy Corey and sister Erma Gould predeceased Dan.

Funeral services will be held on Friday January 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Second Baptist Church with Rev. Ray Merritt officiating

Calling hours will be held on Thursday January 12, 2012 from 5-7 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Interment will be at Leonardsville Cemetery

Contributions may be made in Dan’s memory to the Second Baptist Church.
