Born
Doris Jane Rowin on October 5, 1920 in Van Buren,
Arkansas, she and her brother, mother and father
traveled the south and west during her childhood living
in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri wherever her
father’s civil engineering assignments took them. As a
young girl, Doris was ever active, visiting her uncle in
Washington State to fish for salmon and camp out on Mt.
Ranier. She became an accomplished seamstress, making
her own clothes and excelling in cooking and baking and
playing the drum in the school band. When time came for
college, Doris entered Southwestern Missouri State
Teacher’s college and became the only freshman to be
elected homecoming queen. She majored in home economics
and acted in college plays. It was in one such play that
she met a fellow student, Lowell Holdredge, and when
they graduated, they were married.
Her travels continued when she married Lowell, as he was
an air force cadet, then a pilot in World War II and
then made the Air Force his career. They made homes in
Florida, Michigan (where Linda was born), Kentucky,
Japan, California (where Ann was born), West Burlington
for a few years (where Randy was born) and Oklahoma
before moving permanently back to West Burlington. Each
time Doris would make a warm, inviting home for her
family and become an active participant in the lifestyle
and culture of the area. In Japan, she took
flower-arranging courses, edited a cookbook of Officer’s
wives recipes, and traveled to Mt. Fuji and Tokyo and
other famous cities. Back on the farm in West
Burlington, she enrolled in Oneonta State University to
get her Master’s degree in English and was the
Valedictorian of her class when she graduated.
Doris learned to multitask before the term was coined.
She was a careful homemaker, mother, teacher, gardener,
cook, hand weaver, artist, an avid reader and an
inspiration for her family. She began teaching English
in the Sidney high school and then taught high school
English in Edmeston as well as Psychology even directing
the senior class play. She became secretary and
treasurer of the Episcopal Church in West Burlington and
joined the Butternut Valley Garden Club and became a
member of the local planning board. She was a voracious
reader whether it be cookbooks, novels, garden or
homemaking magazines. She introduced her family to foods
such as paella and yakamish and planted an elaborate
herb garden to have her own fresh herbs. At the same
time she took art classes and classes in weaving. She
set up her own weaving studio and became an accomplished
hand weaver. She also perfected the art of counted
cross-stitch and created lovely works of art. She was a
loving wife and partner, encouraging and then becoming
involved in Lowell’s many endeavors such as tapping
maple trees and making maple syrup, raising bantam
chickens and flying an ultra light aircraft. After
retirement from teaching, she and Lowell traveled the
train across Canada to visit her Uncle and Aunt in the
northwest; flew to London and Copenhagen and of course
to visit their children in Virginia, California and New
York.
Doris was an exceptionally talented, intelligent,
interesting, well-spoken person. She will be missed by
all including her brother and sister in law, George and
