Elsie
C. Coyne, 89, of Edmeston, formerly of Holmdel,
NJ, died
peacefully November 15, 2007 at The Manor.
Elsie was born March 9, 1918, the daughter of
the late
Evangeline (Wilson) and William Palmer Cosgrove,
Matawan, NJ. She married
Vincent James Coyne; he predeceased her August
26, 1992. Elsie and her late
husband, Vincent, moved to NY State after
retirement in 1972.
Elsie
was the first grade teacher in the Matawan
Regional School System, having taught first
grade in Cliffwood, NJ. A graduate of Seton Hall
University, East Orange, NJ; she also held an
Elementary School Teacher Certificate from
Newark State Teachers College, NJ.
Elsie was also a graduate registered Nurse of
Monmouth Medical Center, formerly Monmouth
Memorial Hospital, Long Branch, NJ.
During WWII Elsie was employed in Base Supply,
Kissimmee Air Force Base, where her husband
served in the Military.
Her children and their spouses Suzette and
Matthew Curley of Cooperstown, Vincent James and
Barbara Coyne, II of Navasink, NJ; her
grandchildren and spouses Wayne and Melissa
Olsen, Bret and Christine Olsen; her great
grandchildren Hope Marie Olsen, Samuel Garreit
Olsen, Ellie Elizabeth Olsen, and Abigail Joy
Olsen; and her sister Dorothy Spurgat of Pompano
Beach, FL. Survive Elsie.
Four sisters predeceased her.
Graveside committal services will be held on
Saturday, November 17, 2007 at Old Tennent
Cemetery, Tennent, NJ at 10:30 AM.

Donald
Benjamin, 74, of Burlington Green died
peacefully at home on Friday, November 2, 2007,
surrounded by his loving family.
He was born at home in Burlington Green on
October 10, 1933 the son of Murray and Florence
(Stickles) Benjamin. He married Jeannette Cline
on August 8, 1951 at the home of Pastor & Mrs.
Davenport.
Donald retired as the Housekeeping Supervisor
from Bassett Hospital, where he had been
employed for 30 years. His first priority was
family, and then his love of the outdoors.
Donald savored life, and kept tradition with the
running of the “Benjamin Maple Sugar Bush” in
Burlington Flats. Darien Lake was another
valuable tradition; each year with his whole
family they would camp out, play miniature golf,
and enjoy the rides. This year was no exception,
even though his fight with cancer was coming to
an end. Donald enjoyed John Deere Tractors, and
putting puzzles together. Sharing his
morning meal with his wife of 56 years with yet
another
tradition: pancakes, maple syrup, eggs, and
coffee.
Donald is survived by his wife, Jeannette; his
children and their spouses Kelly Benjamin,
Flossie & Keith Bliss, Paul & Linda Benjamin,
Tim and Beth Benjamin, and Art & Gloria
Benjamin; his grandchildren Nathan, Mitchell,
Paul, Mike, Jennifer and Matthew, Sarah, Daniel,
Meghan, and Brandon; his siblings and their
spouses Richard & Pat Benjamin, Murray & Evelyn
Benjamin, Adrian & Martha Benjamin, Dorothy
Bolton, Kenny & Sharron Benjamin, Mildred
Stebbins, and lot’s of nieces, nephews, and
cousins. His sister, Carrie Bookhout; and
brothers Charlie, Orlo, and
Sidney Benjamin predeceased Donald.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday
November 6, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the
Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston with
Pastor Aswad officiating. Calling hours will be
from 11:00 AM till 1:00 PM prior to the service
on Tuesday.

Area Hospice & Palliative Care.

Elinor
(Ellie) M. Haycock, stepped in the Lord’s arms
on
Saturday, October 27, 2007.
She was born November 5, 1931 the daughter of
Raymond and
Dorothy (Henion) VanHorn. She married Harold L.
Haycock, Jr. on August 16, 1969 in Indian Lake,
NY.
Ellie had a vibrant outlook on life and the
great outdoors. She was an avid walker never
letting the weather deter her from her daily
walk. She enjoyed hiking the high peaks of
the Adirondack, and Indian Lake. During the
winter months you could find her cross-country
skiing or show shoeing. Ellie was well known and
recognized for her flower gardens first in New
Jersey and later in Burlington Flats, and then
Pittsfield. Time with her family was spent apple
and berry picking, canning, raising rabbits,
making wonderful meals, sewing, and planning
Christmas with all her children, and
grandchildren.
Ellie had been employed by Pathfinder Village
for 35 years as a teacher’s aid, served as the
manger of the greenhouse, and had volunteered at
Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.
Ellie is survived by her loving husband Harold;
her children Linda & Robert Dedio, Kenneth Gray,
Billy & Lori Gray, Harold L. & Tania Haycock,
III, Beth & Donald Stringham Jr.; her
grandchildren Lisa Tedeschi, Holly Gray, Tabytha
Gray, James Haycock, Sarah Haycock, Marisa
Haycock, Dana Stringham, and Emily Stringham;
her siblings Edgar VanHorn, Natalie Gray,
Dorothy Martin, Martin VanHorn, and Peggy
Herring.
Grandson, Brian Dedio predeceased Ellie.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday,
October 31, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the
Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston with
Joan Kuhn Terry, CFSP
officiating. Calling hours will be one hour
prior to the service.
Burial will be at Burlington Flats Cemetery.

Robert
Harry Schworm, 88 years old, of the town of
Edmeston, died Oct. 9, 2007, at home.
He was born Oct. 26, 1918, in Edmeston, the son
of Harry J. and Stella (Beatty) Schworm.
Robert married Lanor Collins on Oct. 19, 1941.
She predeceased him in December 2004.
He spent his childhood in Edmeston and was a
graduate of Edmeston Central School, Edmeston.
Robert is survived by his children, Norman
Schworm and Cathy Jakubowski, Edmeston, Joyce
and Don VanWagner, New Berlin, Stella Schworm
and Paul Jensen, Edmeston, and Bobby and Ann
Schworm, Edmeston; grandchildren, Michelle
VonDauber, Valerie Mowers, Eric and Lisa Jensen,
Kaylee and Brianna Schworm, and Heather and
Alyssa McCoy; great-grandchildren, Sophia, Ellie
and Julia VonDauber; two brothers, Leon and Earl
Schworm; and nieces and nephew, Rosemary
Stephens, Karen Willey and Michael Schworm. He
was predeceased by one brother, Donald Schworm.
His love of animals led him to a lifetime of
farming. He worked for Mr. Lyle Bass early in
his life and then purchased his own farm on
Dutch Valley Road in 1949. He remained there for
the rest of his years.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m.
Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, in the Edmeston Union
Cemetery, Edmeston.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m.

Donald
L. Bowen, 56, of Burlington Flats died Tuesday
August 7, 2007 at MIB in Cooperstown.
He was born January 23, 1951 in Cooperstown the
son of Howard and Christine Jane (Wolcott)
Bowen.
Donald graduated from Edmeston Central
School in 1971. He served in the United States
Air Force, and the National Guard until 1977.
Donald returned to his hometown and worked the
family farm of Howard and Jenny Higgins for 35
years. For the past five years Don had been
employed at Bassett Health Care.
He was a member of the Farmers Lodge #553 F&AM.
Don loved sports be it volleyball, basketball,
bowling, hunting, fishing, or most recently
golf. The words friendly competition and his
zeal for giving 110%, earmarked his wholesome
philosophy on life. Don enjoyed the outdoors and
the companionship of his friends.
Don is survived by his sister and brother-in-law
Sandra and Dale Bennett; his brother and
sister-in-law Howard and Bonnie Bowen; his
nieces & nephews Tom Bennett, Jerry Bennett,
Tammey Smith, Lisa Bowen & Warren Williams, Teri
Plows & Kevin Musser Sr., and Brandy & Charles
Zinger; and their children Amanda Smith, Cody
Smith, Eric Bennett, Rebecca Bennett, Brady
Plows, Cole Plows, Shauna Plows, Kevin Musser,
and Caleb Zinger; his second family Howard and
Virginia Higgins and their children Nancy
Schoellig & Tim Dockstader, Priscilla & Richie

Douglas
Ted Robinson of Burlington Flats, died Friday,
August 3, 2007, at home.
He was born in
Cooperstown on November 18, 1938, the only child
of Douglas Talbot and Cecily Barrett Robinson.
Ted married Betty Nesbitt on September 2,
1961.
He graduated from the Manlius Military School in
1956, and from the University of Miami, Florida,
in 1960.
He worked for the New York Central
Mutual Fire Insurance Company for 38 years and
enjoyed life in Edmeston while raising a family.
He was predeceased by his parents; and two
aunts, Marjorie Carpenter and Audrey Lohnas.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; and three
children and their families, Susan R. Stewart
and George L. Stewart of Pittsburgh, PA, and
their children, Bo, Emily, Holly, Will and
Carolyn; Douglas T. Robinson, Jr. and Susan P.
Robinson of East Amherst, and their children,
Samantha and Doug; and Jennifer R. Haack and
John L. Haack of Painted Post, and their
children, Andrew, Sam and Caroline.
Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Mary
Nesbitt of Oneonta; two brothers and
sisters-in-law, Duncan and Becky Nesbitt, of
Kenansville, NC; and Ben and Susan Nesbitt, of
West Oneonta; as well as two nieces and two
nephews.
In addition, three cousins survive, VanNess
Robinson, Seeber Robinson of Edmeston and Sandra
Lohnas Haggerty of Cooperstown; along with many
friends.
Calling hours will be held at the Burlington
Flats Baptist Church from 2pm to 4pm and from
7pm to 9pm Monday, August 6, 2007.

Tuesday August 7, 2007 at the Burlington Flats

Sergeant Major Kenneth Lynn Buell, Jr., USMC
Retired, went home to be with his Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ on July 31, 2007, at his
home in Burlington Flats.
Ken was born
February 25, 1937, in Exeter Center, to Kenneth
L. Buell, Sr. and Catherine Sullivan.
He married his beloved wife, Dianna Buell, on
December 5, 1961, in Burlington Flats.
Ken joined the Marine Corps in June 1955 and
served 24 years. During those 24 years, he
served at the following: 3rd Marine
Division, Clarksville, TN; Quantico, VA; San
Diego, CA; 3rd Marine Division Camp Lejeune, NC;
Sea going on USS Forrestal; Officer Candidate
School in Quantico, VA; drill instructor at
Parris Island, SC; Albany, as well as serving
two tours in Vietnam. He retired from the
Marine Corps in 1978, while serving at Cherry
Point, NC.
He started Ken Buell's Landscaping in 1982
and began working in 1985 for the Hadley Estate
in Cooperstown. Ken retired from there in
2005.
Ken is survived by his wife, Diana Buell;
daughter Paula Briggs and husband Tim, of
Cicero; daughter Gwenda Slattery and husband
Craig, of Burlington Flats; daughter, Carol
Buell-Madison, of Burlington Flats; daughter,
Cindy Arnold and husband Mark, of Burlington
Flats; and grandchildren, Kenneth Honour;
Johnathan and Zachary Briggs; Rebecca, Jacob and
April Bartlett, Collin Slattery; Nicholas Buell,
Elisha and Samuel Madison; Katie and Emily
Arnold.
He had one great-grandchild, Kenneth Todd
Honour Jr.; sister, Eleanor Madaras, husband
Frank; brother, Charles Buell, wife Joyce;
sister, Esther Ludeman, husband Bill; brother,
Ronald Buell, wife Joan; sister Lela Reed;
sister, Cathy Melniczenko, husband Alex;
sister-in-law, Loretta Buell. He is also
survived by 32 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Janice
Truex; his brother Elmer Buell; his father,
Kenneth L. Buell, Sr., and his mother, Catherine
Sullivan.
Ken belonged to the following organizations:
First Baptist Church of Burlington Flats;
Brunswick Island Baptist Church, Supply, NC;
American Legion Post 1311, Edmeston; VFW,
Cooperstown; and the Marine Corps League.
Calling hours will be from 2pm to 4pm and
from 7pm to 9pm, Thursday, August 2, 2007 at the
Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home of Edmeston.
His funeral will be held at the First Baptist
Church, Burlington Flats and officiated by
Pastor Jay Henderson at 11am, Friday, August3,
2007. Interment will immediately follow
the service in the Huntley Cemetery, West
Exeter.

and support.

Janet
Nelsen, 77, of Garrattsville, wife of the late
Roger Nelsen, died peacefully at home on Friday,
July 27, 2007, surrounded by family and friends.
She was born March 28, 1930, the daughter of the
late George and Helen Schwarze in Hempstead,
Long Island.
As a young girl, Janet enjoyed
riding her bike to Jones Beach. She loved the
ocean and was an avid swimmer.
She met Roger Nelsen while attending Mineola
High School and they spent many happy days at
Jones Beach during their courtship. Janet and
Roger married in 1951, built a house in
Huntington, Long Island and had two children,
Peter and Susanne.
While living on Long Island, Janet and Roger
made many life long friendships with
schoolmates, neighbors and co-workers that have
endured to this day. Janet enjoyed entertaining
friends and family with many pool parties and
festive gatherings at the holidays, which always
featured her wonderful cooking. She loved to
bake and one of her most favorite traditions was
making dozens upon dozens of Christmas cookies
of every kind that she lovingly packaged and
sent to friends and relatives near and far.
In 1968, Janet and her family moved to
Garrattsville, marking a new chapter in their
lives. She enjoyed living in the country and set
about decorating the farmhouse, planting flower
and vegetable gardens and tending to her bird
feeders. She adored her many pet cats and the
simple pleasure of watching deer out in the
fields. One of her favorite pastimes was
watching hummingbirds while she and Roger sat on
the back porch or in the screen house while
reading or playing cards. She was a member of
the local Ladies Group and loved co-hosting
their annual Christmas luncheon at her home with
her mother, Helen. She worked for several years
as a teacher’s aide at Pathfinder Village.
Janet leaves to mourn her passing her son Peter
and his wife Sue of South Windsor, CT, daughter
Susanne and her husband Tim Eschler of
Garrattsville and her adoring grandchildren,
Holly Nelsen and her fiancé John Cook of
Arlington, VA, Daniel Nelsen of South Windsor,
CT, Candace Eschler and her fiancé Justin Hoag
and Dana Eschler of Garrattsville.
Funeral Services for Janet will be held at 10:00
a.m. Monday, July 30, 2007 at the Morgan-Jackson
All Faiths Chapel at Pathfinder Village in
Edmeston. Burial will follow at Hillington
Cemetery, Morris. Calling hours for Janet will
be held from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, 2007
at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in
Edmeston. Friends and family are invited to a
celebration of Janet’s life at her home
immediately following the committal services.

James
Cirillo, 76, died tragically on Thursday July
12, 2007 in West Edmeston.
He served in the United States Air Force during
the Korean Conflict. James retired from the New
York City Police Force where he had spent many
years in the Stakeout Unit, and also at the
Federal Law Enforcement Training Center as a
firearms instructor. After James retired, he
offered his firearms expertise through periodic
firearms training courses internationally.
He authored several books and video’s including
“Guns, Bullets, and Gunfights: Lessons and Tales
From a Modern-Day Gunfighter.” He was a
well-qualified author from his experience in
more than 25-armed encounters through his NYPD
career.
James had a passion for life, and his vitality
was contagious to all who he met and instructed.
He loved the outdoors enjoying the time to hunt,
fish, and spend time with nature. He was also a
very humorous man, who would weave tales to the
pleasure of the listener. James was loved by his
family.
James was born on January 19, 1931 in Manhattan,
NY, the son of Vincent and Mary (Spanos)
Cirillo. His wife of 41 years, ( formerly
Mildred Morel) predeceased James in1997.
He is survived his children and their spouses
James and Antoinette Jr, Margaret and Albert
Alimena; his grandchildren Nicole Cirillo,
Katrina Cirillo, Kristen Alimena, and Alexa
Alimena; his sister Victoria DeMela Paz; his
companion Violet Jimenez, and her grandchildren,
Matthew Jimenez, Luke Jimenez, Brendan Jimenez,
David Drexler, Daniel Drexler, who
affectionately called him “Papa Jim.” His
brother Nicholas Cirillo predeceased James.
A Memorial Service was held at Noon on Sunday,
July 15, 2007 at the West Edmeston, NY Baptist
Church with Pastor Don Buck officiating.

Audrey
B. Lohnas, 94, of Edmeston passed into the
heavenly dimension on July 9, 2007.
She was born at home on February 14, 1913 in
Burlington Flats, the daughter of Lawrence and
Letia (Lennon) Barrett. Audrey married Glenn
Lohnas on November 24, 1937. He predeceased her
on November 18, 1966
Audrey graduated from Edmeston Central School at
the age of 15. She attended Cazenovia Finishing
School, and then graduated from Hartwick College
with a teaching degree. Audrey taught at
Cazenovia Seminary and Trumansburg Central
School. She returned to Edmeston Central School
as the Business Teacher where she retired in
1976. Never one to miss an opportunity, she was
later employed at the Fenimore House as a tour
guide. Audrey was centered on her family and
Edmeston. She loved her independence, which her
golf cart provided. Her morning visit to the
girls coffee club at Schworm’s, her Audubon
Trail walking trips with Marge Holdridge, and
always kindly saying “Edmeston does it better”.
Not to be forgotten was her love of music that
“had a beat”. She loved to dance, including
square dancing.
Audrey is survived by her daughter and
son-in-law, Sandra and Ken Haggerty; her
grandchildren Jeffrey Haggerty and Trista
Haggerty; her great grandchildren Megan
Haggerty, Kayla Haggerty, Matt Denison, Jessica
Denison, and Javier Sierra.
Her husband Glenn, and sisters Marjorie
Carpenter, Cecily Robinson, and Phoebe Barrett
predeceased Audrey.
Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday July
11, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Second Baptist
Church, Edmeston with Pastor Jay Henderson
officiating. Calling hours will be from 10:00 AM
till 11:00 Am prior to the service on Wednesday.
Interment will be at Edmeston Union Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in Audrey’s memory to
the Hawk Circle Wilderness Camp’s Otsego Youth
Leadership Program.

Earl
“The Man” Arthur, 83, of Burlington Flats died
at his home on Friday, July 6, 2007 with his
family at his side. He was born in New York
State on May 15, 1924 and has made his home with
Marcia and Paul Pritchard and family for many
years. Earl was a lover of the outdoors and
especially enjoyed being in the woods with Paul
and cutting wood. He loved gardening and fishing
and enjoyed the challenge of keeping a fire
going. Earl was happily entertained by Western
movies, music and dancing and had a special
place in his heart for family, children and
animals. Earl was proud of his accomplishments
and awards at ARC Otsego.
His family, Marcia and Paul Pritchard, Amanda,
Jeff and Izaiah Conklin, Andrea and Mike Long,
Alicia Pritchard and his pets, Little Bit and
Myat, survive him.
Funeral services for Earl will be held on
Monday, July 9, 2007 at 3PM at the
Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston
with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating. Burial
will follow at Taylor Hill Cemetery. Calling
hours for Earl will be from 1 to 3PM on Monday,
just prior to the service.
Earl’s family would like to thank Catskill Area
Hospice for the care and consideration Earl
received during his illness.

Clinton
W. Southard, 59, of the town of Plainfield
passed away Sunday, July 1, 2007 at his home
with his family by his side.
He was born July 26th, 1947 in Franklin, NJ, the
son of Clinton and Martha Rose (Crum) Connor. On
November 4th, 1967 he married Elsie Crane, who
survives. Clinton was a self-employed salesman.
Clinton was a lover of the outdoors. He enjoyed
gardening, his flowers and hunting fishing and
trapping. He was a Vietnam veteran and served in
the Army from 1964 to 1967.
In addition to his wife, Elsie, he is survived
by his children; Carrie (Kenneth) Wehrenberg,
Clinton (Theresa) Southard, Samuel (Kimberly)
Southard. His grandchildren; Courtney,
Christopher, Kenneth, Chelsea, Kevin, Stephanie,
Dana, David, Robert, Tasha, Elese and a
great-grandson Gabriel. His sister Martha Manson
also survives him. Clinton was pre-deceased by
both parents and his sister Marilyn and grandson
Clinton F. Southard Jr.
A Memorial Service and Gathering will be held at
his home on July 7th, 2007 at 2:00 pm with
Pastor Jim Ketcham of the Brookfield Weslyan
Church officiating. Because of Clinton’s love of
the outdoors the family requests that you plant
a memorial tree in his memory.

Angela
Mazzarella, 57, of Edmeston went home to her
Lord on Monday, June 11, 2007 at AO Fox Hospital
in Oneonta.
She was born April 15, 1950 in Astoria, Queens,
the daughter of Bennie and Frances (Giampapa)
Mazzarella.
Prior to her move to Edmeston, the
Montauk Public School employed Angela as a
secretary.
Angela held close to her heart those in which
she loved: her children, her grandchild, her
nieces, her sister, and her parents. She was at
home with herself enjoying horseback riding,
reading, or Tri-Cam painting. Her canine
companions also survive Angela: he dog Angel,
Dawn’s dog Sadie, and Al’s dog Capone.
Angela
is survived by her parents Bennie and Frances
Mazzarella; her children Dawn DaCostaFaro,

John
Hill, Sr., 83, of West Burlington passed away
Friday, June 8, 2007 at his residence. John was
born in Ireland, the son of David and Ellen
(Phair) Hill on November 24, 1923. As a young
boy, John immigrated to America with his parents
and settled first on Long Island before coming
to the Town of Burlington. John was very proud
of his Irish heritage and had hoped to make a
return trip to the Emerald Isle.
John had many interesting occupations. He was a
school bus driver for the Edmeston Central
School District and drove a feed truck. John
especially loved working for New York Central
Mutual Insurance in the maintenance and security
divisions. He loved to be outdoors with animals
and wildlife and was an avid fisherman. John was
a fan of the New York Yankees and enjoyed all
sports. A good joke to tell and a time to
reminisce were among his favorite things. His
“scooter” gave him the freedom to be outdoors
again after his illness and he was often seen
motoring about West Burlington. John loved many
things but he had a special fondness and love
for his grandchildren.

Joan P.
Jahn, of Bayville died Thursday May 3, 2007 at
St. Lukes Hospital in New Hartford.
She was born March 8, 1933 in Queens, NY the
daughter of Nicholas and Eva (Hager) Laljer. She
married Christian Jahn Jr. on June 15, 1957. He
predeceased her on August 10, 1993.
Joan received her Registered Nursing Degree
from Belleview Hospital. While her children were
young she was a stay at home mom. Later she
returned to the nursing field until retiring
from the United Cerebral Palsy in Bayville.
Being with her family was one of Joan’s greatest
joys. As a young mother she taxied her children,
and in later years played cards with her
grandchildren. Walking on the beach, enjoying
her dog, reading, and completing puzzles gave
her many hours of satisfaction.
Her children and spouses Karen and Brian
Thurman, Eric and Dana Jahn, Cheryn and Bob
Payne, Heidi and David Grossman; her
grandchildren Collen, Elaine, Tara, and Natalie
Thurman; Katie, Leslie, and Jessica Payne; and
Chyle, Becca, and Jake Grossman; her sister and
brother-in-law Carolyn and Robert Sutton survive
Joan.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday May 6,
2007 at 1:00 PM at the Houk-Johnston-Terry
Funeral Home, Edmeston with Rev. Jim Fletcher
officiating. Calling hours are Saturday May 5th
from 7-9 PM
Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery
on May 8, 2007 at 1:00 PM

Horace
Root, 93, passed away Monday April 9, 2007 at
Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich. He was born
November 25, 1913 in Manlius, the son of the
late Jay and Lillian (Fitch) Root. Horace
attended school in Manlius and was the first
graduating class at Morrisville’s Auto Mechanic
program in 1936. He worked as a mechanic in
Bridgewater, Hamilton and Waterville before
coming to West Edmeston as an auto mechanic for
I.T. & C.A. Welch & Sons in 1941. A position he
held for 50 years.
Horace was a Charter Member of the West Edmeston
Volunteer Fire Department serving as Assistant
Chief under Warren H. Belden, then as Chief for
28 years. He also served as Fire Commissioner in
later years. He was a past trustee of the First
Baptist Church and for many years had a route
transporting adults and children to Church and
Sunday School. One of his interests was talking
on his CB radio as “Monkey Wrench” and had made
many friends on the airwaves. He also enjoyed
the coffee runs to the local diners with his
friends and working at the Fire Department
fundraisers. Horace was honored in 1981 as the
Otsego County Fireman of the Year.
On April 7,
1939 he married Doris Burch of Bridgewater; she
predeceased him on December 12, 2001. Daughter,
Karen Root, granddaughter Connie Snell and his
four siblings also predeceased Horace. He is
survived by his daughter and son-in-law Gail and
Tom VanBrink; granddaughter and grandson Brenda
and Darren Belden, grandson Don Snell; great
grandchildren Chris, Erica, Brad, and Amanda
Belden and Amber Snell; one niece Nancy and Joe
Gennosa, nephews Ronald and Katie Burch, Rod
Hurlbutt, Greg and Blanche Hurlbutt, Bill and
Stacy Hurlbutt, Don and Kate Jones, one
sister-in-law
Wanda Burch Landon and husband Burt, as well as
many close friends.
For the past three years Horace has resided at
the Gilmour Health Facility in Norwich where he
gained many friends

Association will be conducting a service at 8PM
Funeral Services will be on Saturday, April 14
at 11AM at the First Baptist Church, West

Donald
W. Wheeldon, affectionately known as “Bear”, 39,
of Columbus went home to the Lord on Sunday
March 25, 2007.
He was born September 5, 1967 in Utica the son
of Clifford Jr. and Barbara (Slentz) Wheeldon.
Curtis Lumber in New Berlin employed Donald. He
was an avid outdoorsman who appreciated and
enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing including ice
fishing, and gardening. Closest to his heart
were his children, and his adored grandmother,
Ruth Slentz.
Donald is survived by his mother Barbara
Wheeldon; his father, Clifford Wheeldon Jr. and
his wife, Eileen; his children Ashton and Dalton
Wheeldon; his significant other Jodi Cordell and
children Chelsea Klotz and Zachary Cordell; his
sister’s, Terri Wheeldon, Jennifer Wagner and
husband Terry; niece Cassidy Wagner; and many
Aunts, Uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday March
29, 2007 at the Columbus Community Church at
2:00 PM with Rev. Steve Reese officiating.
Calling hours are from Noon till 2:00 PM prior
to the service.

Edward Robert Lis, 79, of Burlington Flats,
died Sunday March 4, 2007 at Chenango Memorial
Hospital in Norwich.
He was born May 11, 1927 in Rome, NY the son of
Stanley and Teresa (Lotycz) Lis.
Edward retired from the Otsego County Hwy.
Department where he had been employed as Foreman
for 25 years. He and his twin brother Edwin
owned a diary farm with his parents. Edward
loved tapping trees, cutting fence posts or
firewood, and had also helped operate a garbage
route. Being known, as a good worker and being a
helpful neighbor were important values that he
had been raised with.
Edward had a special relationship with his
brother, Edwin. They enjoyed traveling, running
errands, and farming together.
His twin brother Edwin; his nephew Stanley; and
special friends Faith & Rex Yurenka survive
Edward.
His brother Henry Lis, and sister Salome Lis
predeceased Edward.
Committal services will be private at Burlington
Green Cemetery.

Stanley Shillieto, 92, of Burlington Green
died Wednesday, February 28, 2007, with his
family by his side.
He was born March 21, 1914, in the town of
Burlington, the son of William J. and J. Iva
(Lake) Shillieto. He married Helen Green on June
26, 1948.
Stanley was a dairy and poultry farmer. He also
was a former Town of Burlington Supervisor, Town
of Burlington Republican Committeeman, Otsego
County Executive Republican Committeeman,
President of the Burlington Green Cemetery, and
the current caretaker of the Jedidiah Peck
Historic Cemetery. In his later years he and his
daughter, Linda, enjoyed working with their
horses. He also loved to dance, play cards and
travel.
Stanley is survived by his wife of 58 years,
Helen; his children, Gordon Shillieto, Mark
Shillieto, Linda and John Misencik; and his
grandchildren, Michael Shillieto, Stephanie
Shillieto, John J. Misencik, and Joshua
Misencik. He was predeceased by his son, David
Shillieto, and his sister, Christine Shillieto
Fitch.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday March 4,
2007, at 2:00 PM at the Houk-Johnston-Terry
Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Reverend John
Young officiating. Calling hours will be
Saturday, March 3, 2007, from 5 to7 PM at the
Funeral Home.
Interment will be at Burlington Green Cemetery.

Everett H. Harder, 84, formerly of Edmeston,
died Monday January 22, 2007 at Good Samaritan
Hospital in West Babylon. He was born December
10, 1922 in Queens, New York, the son of
Fredrick and Nellie (Gardiner) Harder. On June
28, 1947 he married Gladys Jean Webb. His
beloved wife, Gladys, predeceased him on July 5,
2003.
Everett was employed at the Neptune Meter
Company in New York City as a machinist and as a
school custodian in the Uniondale School
District on Long Island. Leaving school at an
early age to seek employment he developed a
strong work ethic. Everett was a hard worker who
provided for his children in every way. He and
Gladys loved their home in Edmeston and
especially visits from family and friends. He
will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved
him.
His children, Linda Milwood, Everett
Harder, Jr., Donna Miller, Deborah Rosenberger,
Robert Harder and Beth Lavenziano; 15
grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and his
sisters, Nancy Perwass and Dorothy Wagner,
survive Everett.
Calling hours for Everett will be held at the
Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston
from 11am to 1pm on Thursday, January 25, 2007.
Funeral services will follow the calling hours
at 1pm with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating.
Burial will be in Edmeston Union Cemetery.
